About

The answer is almost never the obvious one

The Wayfaring Kind makes long-form documentaries about why places ended up the way they are. Why do four in five Coloradans live on one narrow strip? Why has 180 miles of Florida never kept a port? Why do seven Texas cities sit on one line?

Every film starts with the land itself, and we measure it: elevation models, surveyed depths, historical maps and archives, checked figure by figure. What you see on screen is what the ground actually says. Then we follow what people did with it: the treaties, the railroads, the water, the money.

This site is the rest of each film: the map to explore yourself, the full transcript, how locals say the names, and every source we used. If you live in a place we've covered, we want to hear from you. The people who live there know things no archive does.
